About this coffee

Coffee Story

The best coffees from Sulawesi are grown and processed in the area known as Torajaland, near the upcountry town of Rantepao. The villagers here have a long history of coffee cultivation, and they remain faithful to their traditional methods — planting trees on small plots near their houses. These soaring-roof structures, called Tongkonan, are said to have first been built in heaven. The coffee tastes like it might have been grown there, too.

Above the emerald terraces of rice paddies that produce the staple of Torajans' diet, trees of the old variety grow in even greener jungle. It's their cash crop, one which brings everyone together to pick and process beans as a way of supplementing the family income. We think the unique cultural heritage and time-honored practices of this region have a lot to do with the distinctive taste of its Sulawesi-Kalosi coffee: unusually deep and complex, with rich flavors that evoke the spice-laden air of the Indonesian archipelago.

Peet's has been sourcing the very best lots of this rare coffee for many years. And we take an extra step to duplicate the celestial qualities of old: semi-aging our beans, which enhances their intrinsic earthiness and herbal, nutty notes. Our Sulawesi-Kalosi brews a full-bodied and balanced cup, with a heady multi-dimensional aroma that's nothing short of heavenly.

We have been enjoying this coffee for several years by now after having tried other coffees and blends previously. It is so consistently excellent, it is difficult to experiment with other coffees or blends. It is one of the more pricier coffees offered by Peet's, but it is worth the higher cost. Peet's represents it as being full bodied but balanced. That is a good description of its character. If you have not tried it, order a pound or two and give it a go. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Amazing - by far our favorite Peet's coffee! Full, rich, with no bitterness, it's simply a joy to drink. And having lived in N. Sulawesi, I can easily say that this is the best there is, bar none! Sumatra being a close second.

THIS is what coffee should be: full bodied, fruity, earthy with floral notes - all in a single bean. A perfect representative for an island we used used to call Celebes but now Sulawesi. Layers of wonderful flavors; S-K and Sumatra are now the only coffees drunk in our home, with an occasional nod to Garuda Blend.
Whether it's the bean or the roasting skill, makes a perfect cup every time.
Indonesia should be re-christened the coffee islands.

The taste opens with a flash of brightness. The quick tangy start settles into a rich, earthy flavor that glides across the tongue. Super smooth. Thick and solid, like its aroma, with a gently fading finish.

Sulawesi is my "go to coffee" it is rich, unique, it has a lot of depth and complexity. It holds up well when you add cream and a sweetener, but is equally delightful all by it's self. Love, love, love this coffee!

This coffee has an aroma of roasted nuts and chocolate. It's sweet, rich, and full-bodied. Its woodiness is very sharp and it had some distinctive herbal notes. So dry and smooth like hay or earth.

The aroma reminds me of wet earth, moss, and wood. Very full-bodied with low palate acidity. Toasty, dry, herbal and nutty. Very woody.
