About this coffee

Coffee story

Distinctive in both flavor and appearance, Arabian Mocha Sanani grows under harsh, primitive conditions in the arid mountains of Yemen, on the Arabian Peninsula. The mocha variety of coffee favors a terrain of low bushes on barely cultivated land, and these plants sprout miraculously from spring water oases and rock-hewn terraces — where they have to struggle to produce every single coffee cherry.

The centuries-old method for rendering the beans is equally arduous. When most of the cherries are ripe, the farmers pick them all at once and dry them on rooftops and hardened-earth patios. These dried coffee cherries are then hand-milled through traditional stone wheels to remove the hulls and release the two beans inside. This timeless, organic process is what accounts for the rare and naturally wild flavors characteristic of Arabian Mocha Sanani coffee.

Although the unusually small, rounded beans are irregular in form, size, and color, they brew one of the finest cups of coffee on earth. The flavor is reminiscent of a spicy wine, with a full body and pungent, exceedingly complex aroma. Excellent on its own or blended, the unique taste is a perfect complement to almost any other coffee — especially in the classic blend with Java.

This coffee has a definite tobacco/leather note (among several other flavor notes) that some coffee fans, including me, don't particularly enjoy. For those who are seeking a rich, smooth-but-somewhat-bright, complex dark roast without the tobacco element, I strongly recommend the utterly delicious Guatemala San Sebastian over this one.

THE finest coffee I've ever had in my entire life, and it's been a good long life so far. Not my everyday coffee - that's The Major now, but the coffee I drink when I have company, feel like I need pampering, or when the cold winds howl through the Basins and Ranges in the near to sub 0°F winter days and nights. It's a sippin' coffee, not a drinkin' coffee.

Strong, robust and distinctive - I've been drinking this coffee for over 20 years, since returning to Menlo Park, alternating with other coffees but always coming back. Now we have a subscription to Peet's, which always delivers us Arabian Mocha Sanani and something else. No matter how good those other coffees are, it's always great to return to my favorite, which I always make in an Italian stovetop espresso maker.

This is my staple coffee. I like to keep it on hand, even when my husband and I try other African roasts. It is similar to the coffee I drank at work, while living in Saudi Arabia.
AMS is a very smooth, rich coffee with a deep chocolate aroma. We have this coffee shipped to us in Bend, as Peet's has not yet opened a store in Central Oregon.
Ground 30 seconds before placing in a pre-heated press pot with 98C, non-chlorinated water, AMS makes a truly superb cup of coffee

My sister, who lives in Oakland, introduced me to this coffee and I was hooked! I love a darker roast and richer bean. This coffee is just fantastic.
