This vanilla extract is made with beans from Madagascar for an especially rich, delicious flavor.
Vanilla, arguably the most popular flavor in the world, originated in Mexico. Brought to Europe around 1520 by the explorer Cortez, it was first used in conjunction with cacao beans in a drink called Chocolati. Since then it has been used in many foods due to its flavor-enhancing properties.

Now grown mainly in Madagascar, the vanilla bean is the only edible fruit-bearing orchid. Each flower, open only one day a year, must be hand-pollinated to produce a pod, which then requires a labor-intensive 3-6 month curing process to develop full flavor. About 5 pounds of harvested pods produces only 1 pound of cured pods.

The cold process method extracts the essence from the selected vanilla beans, the finest obtainable, to produce a flavor of unsurpassed richness. It is then packaged especially for Peet’s so that all can enjoy.
