At Peet's, we've always prided ourselves on bringing our customers the freshest, best-tasting coffee possible. We roast small batches of coffee by hand, and to order, and never carry an inventory of roasted beans.
Q. How does Peet's keep its coffee fresh at a grocery store?
Coffee for our grocery distribution is machine-packaged shortly after roasting. The package is sealed, and a one-way valve is applied to permit "de-gassing" in the bag. Additionally, each package is "nitrogen-flushed" to eliminate residual oxygen in the package. We are pleased with the integrity of this package, which keeps our coffee tasting great. Each bag is labeled with a "best by" date that is exactly 90 days past the roast date. We still only roast the coffee when it is ordered--even when the order is for grocery stores.
Q. Is there enough good coffee available to maintain Peet's quality?
Yes. Although the top quality coffees are always somewhat rare, even more rare, it seems, are roasters who are willing to pay top prices. We have been planning for an increase in coffee purchases for the past few years in anticipation of our growth, and work closely with our growers to make sure that the quality and quantity of beans available fit our standards.
Q. What is the difference between buying Peet's in a grocery store and buying through the traditional Peet's venues?
Grocery stores offer a fast and convenient way to buy Peet's coffee, with locations across the entire country. We offer a limited selection of our coffees at grocery stores, in special 12oz. packaging. For our full line of coffees and teas, visit our flagship retail stores, or get handy home delivery through peets.com and our call center (1-800-999-2132).
