This is a delicious, smooth cup. No bitterness. Deserves the name Super.
I discovered this coffee last year (2016) and fell in love with the strong blueberry flavor and extremely smooth taste, but this year's batch (2017) has been extremely disappointing.
The first bag I bought this year had no blueberry notes and was an extremely bitter dark roast. I ordered a bag through the website to see if a later roast was better, it was a slight improvement but still did not compare to what it was last year. I've spoken with Peets employees but they say there isn't anything different with this year's roast and it must be just me. There is no denying this supernatural is not super at all this year. It is a fine coffee, but it is not worthy of the Ethiopian Supernatural name.
This coffee smells absolutely wonderful, and it was fascinating to read the explanation behind the name "super natural." I wish I could get it to taste accordingly. I've tried varying just about every element in the brewing process that I have control over but I just can't seem to consistently get it right. I've ended up with cups that have tasted wonderful a couple times. It definitely tastes very fresh, and I imagine that I eventually could figure it out. In the meantime I've gone through almost an entire bag and that's about the end of my patience.. and money spent on this roast.
By far the BEST Peets beans I have had to date. The blueberry, lemony effervescence is pronounced and distinct. Stephany at the call center shipped me out a pound and It's the bee's knees. Fiona (barista) and Elaine (district manager) at the Chestnut Hill, MA store brewed me a complimentary pour over of Ethiopian Super Natural and then Fiona gave me a complimentary half pound to take home. I love them. Fiona is the best and Elaine referred to this coffee as "Heaven in a cup" and she was spot on.
Some dang good coffee
