Coffee Story

Hiking the slopes of Volcan San Pedro, your senses are awakened by the gentle trade wind locals call the Xocomil.

You’re on the southern shore of Lake Atitlan, in southwestern Guatemala, surrounded by three volcanic cones including San Pedro -- a setting that Aldous Huxley famously described as having the tranquil beauty of Lake Como, but with the embellishments of several immense volcanoes. Overwhelmed by the natural setting, the famous author quipped “it really is too much of a good thing.”

Peet’s brings you a taste of that good thing with Guatemala Atitlan Organic, grown on these very slopes by la Federación de los Pueblos Mayas de Sololá (FEDEPMA) The rich volcanic soils from the three surrounding volcanoes and carefully managed organic practices of FEDEPMA contribute to the impressive quality and distinct flavors we found in this coffee.

With 70 members, FEDEPMA is a small but growing cooperative located in San Pedro and its neighboring towns of San Juan, Santiago Atitlan, and San Marcos. In addition to coffee, it produces honey, soy, and textiles for local enjoyment as well as export. FEDEPMA is able to invest a large portion of its resources back into the community, helping it build, educate, and foster a cooperative that will continue to grow and flourish.

The deep chocolate flavors and crisp acidity you’ll enjoy in this coffee is common to other high-quality, high-altitude coffees. But it is the unique fruity flavors that distinguish Guatemala Atitlan Organic and make this experience as special as the gentle Xocomil rushing across your face.
