Coffee Story

A loyal customer of our original Berkeley store, retired army officer Key Dickason brought the idea for our most beloved blend to Mr. Peet in 1969. Intrigued, our founder worked with the local gourmand and coffee aficionado to refine it. They sampled countless combinations before arriving at what is now our all-time bestseller. The result was so good, Alfred Peet decided naming it after his friend wasn't enough — Dickason's rich, complex blend also deserved a promotion from sergeant to major.

Major Dickason's combines the best origin coffees from the world's premier growing regions, each imparting its distinctive regional characteristics while still effortlessly rounding into a smooth, balanced cup. Over the years, it has become the coffee that epitomizes Peet's: flavorful, deeply roasted, and unsurpassingly satisfying. But for us, Major D's is just like a relationship with an old friend. We'll always remember it as the story of a customer's passion, an expert's palate, and a shared love of coffee.

Brewing Tips

Brew it in a French press for a perfect cup, or enjoy it as an exquisite espresso.

I just purchased a bag of Dickason's blend and I'm amazed at how accurate the description concerning Body and Liveliness has turned out to be. I use both more beans at a finer grind than is standard. This help me get the rich, full body that I require. However, what is best about this particular roast is that it doesn't turn highly acidic as some other dark roasts(i.e.French, Espresso) and remains balanced.
So bravo to Peets for not only developing a roast that is the best chain-store drip-coffee, but makes one of the best cups I've ever made at home.

When I first moved to Berkeley in 1980, I discovered that I was fortunate enough to live a block away from the original Peet's on the corner of Vine and Walnut Sts. My morning ritual was rapidly established: Grab my mug, get the paper and follow the nose towards the freshly roasting aroma that wafted through the air to get to that tasty, dark and rich deliciousness offered by good friends.

Having tried many a coffee and various blends from around the world, I always tend to gravitate back to my all time favorite: Major Dickason's. Do not make a change to this masterpiece...

This has been my favorite coffee since 1984 when I moved to the Haight Ashbury. My roommate told me that's all we were allowed to brew in the apartment. Once I tried it, I wholeheartedly agreed. One of the very best blends anywhere from any roaster: strong, complex, and rich without being bitter.

Somehow full-bodied but mellow, powerful but not bitter,
just right whether I have it ground for drip or our french press…
a treasure, and an 'enhancer' whenever we have it!

I first tried this this coffee at the Rose st. shop in Berkeley back in the mid 70's. There were crowds of regulars hanging on all four corners outside every morning and Peet was working in the back of the shop, usually roasting. I couldn't believe that coffee- it was so strong and full of flavor so it was quite a novelty and quickly became an addiction to many including myself. And it became a local legend-people would say " You've got to try this coffee!".

My sister send me a lb of this coffee and I must say I have not tasted a better full bodied coffee. I usually dont buy coffee from commercial chains and look for local roasters but I have to admit this one is just amazingly aromatic and deep.

For years, I had been trying to find the perfect coffee. A coffee that is rich and smooth. A coffee with a mild acidity but with a bright quality that I enjoy. And I finally did it! Major Dickason's is it! Whatever types of coffee are blended to make unique brew is what I have always been looking for! I love you Major D!

Major Dickason's Blend is like a perfectly orchestrated symphony. Five coffees, each with very different flavors on their own, combine for the smoothest cup with sneaky peaks of flavor! It's so easy and rewarding to drink!
