Coffee Story

Travel just north of Australia and you'll reach the second-largest island on the planet, New Guinea. Blessed with rich volcanic soils and perhaps the most ideal climate for growing coffee, the island is divided evenly between two territories — the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya on the west and the country of Papua New Guinea, where this coffee comes from, on the east.

The beans in this Peet's favorite were originally imported from Jamaica's Blue Mountain region in 1937, bringing with them the dawn of coffee cultivation in Papua New Guinea. Indo-Pacific conditions proved immensely favorable to Jamaican coffee, producing a complete, complex cup that recalls the old Blue Mountain style, before the influx of high-yield, less flavorful varietals. We think its broad, mellow flavors, aromatic complexity, and full body make it one of the world's absolute best.

Very good coffee, I still think JBM is a better quality coffee overall, but this has the same low, well balanced acidity/bitterness that JBM is known for but also has unique, sort of herbal like flavors that are unique to this coffee.

After reading the reviews on New Guinea Highlands here on the Peets website, I started craving a cup of really good coffee, so I left work early and headed to Peet's. I ordered a cup of New Guinea Highlands made with a French Press, and. . . Yep! Best cup of coffee I've ever had at Peet's. It had plenty of flavor, but wasn't so strong that it hit me over the head, made me feel like I'd just O.D.'d, or left a bitter coffee carpet on my tongue (which is what usually happens with me). In fact, this was the first time I was able to drink the entire cup and enjoy the last sip as much as the first. I loved the balance of this coffee, but found it more interesting and nuanced than the Jamaica Blue Mountain.

I just opened my freshly roasted whole bean New Guinea Highlands coffee, used my french press...it is delicious!!! I must say this is one of the BEST cups of coffee I have ever had! It is so smooth, and has such great body to it that I don't need to add any sugar. I love the lower acidity and I just can't believe it has taken me so long to find it! Thank you Peet's.

I''ve been drinking Peet's coffee for ? 10 years?... more?? First Major Dick, Guatemala, Arabian, and now focusing on the Pacific where I''d like to stay! The New Guinea Highlands is an impressive coffee. It''s delicious and interesting and addictive. Wicked good! I brew it in a presspot with filtered water just off the boil, then let it sit for 10-15 minutes. The result -- a full-flavored brew that, like a really good book, grabs and doesn't let go!

I have been making my way through all of the coffees available at Peet's over the past year (all are great) and I finally reached New Guinea Highlands. As with these other great reviews, I won't repeat the obvious. All I will say is WOW!!! I believe that this is one of the best all around blends offered. Definately give this one a try!!!

Great morning coffee. Not too acidic and drinks smoothly while also maintaining a full flavor. One of my favorite Peet's coffees.

This is a sister coffee plant from the Blue Jamaica Highland and this coffee replicates a similar smooth and mellow vibe of the Blue and even has a similar texture to a Kona. Very light in texture, flavorful but not too acidic or bold this easy drinking coffee is a great middle of the road coffee - able to please coffee drinkers from any coffee region...

New Guinea is a nice mellow, medium body coffee with a bit of earthy undertones that can be enjoyed hot or cold any time of day.

I find this coffee very herbal, spicy, slightly floral, and almost soupy - like a warm meal.
