About this tea

Tea Story

Darjeeling is known not only for its quality, but for its variety. During the 19th century, imported China tea was planted along with indigenous bushes from low-lying Assam. As a result, many hybrids now populate the gardens. The elevation of a single estate may sweep from 2,000 feet up to 6,000 feet, with the temperature and cloud cover varying widely. High-grown teas are the most revered, as the cool weather slows the growth of the leaves and concentrates the flavor. Add to this the three distinct plucking seasons – first flush, second flush and autumnals – and the range of quality from even a single estate can vary enormously. Darjeeling Fancy is a leaf grade second flush tea with a noticeably puckery quality and a rich, flowery bouquet.

Brewing Tips

Start with a preheated cup or teapot.
Measure 1 spoonful (3g) of tea for each cup of water.
Bring the water to a rolling boil; steep tea for 4 minutes.
Strain leaves while pouring.

I studied in Mt. Hermon School, Darjeeling in the 60s & 70s and then taught there in 1978 & 1985. The school sits among some of the famed Darjeeling tea estates. As such, and as a lover of Darjeeling tea, I know a lot about Darjeeling tea.

This is a great tea for people who want the true flavour of Darjeeling tea but who also add milk and sugar to their tea.

I have never been disappointed in the flavour that this tea has brought with it as I have continued to drink it since 1995 - soon after I first came to the US and was given a box of it as a gift by the father of a student here.

I highly recommend this tea.

I absolutely agree with the last reviewer. Darjeeling Fancy F.O.P. is a good everyday cup of tea - all of the bouquet and flavor of a good Darjeeling. More expensive varieties of Darjeeling, while wonderful in their own right, don't have me reaching for them on a daily basis... this one does.

This is my favorite tea in the world. It has the usual flowery darjeeling flavor, but it is also robust enough to stand up to a little bit of milk and to drink every day. More expensive specialty darjeelings are more for "tasting," as their flavors are often highly delicate, but this is for drinking.

This unassuming name masks the fact that this tea is TOTALLY AWESOME. It is everything a Darjeeling should be- it has light, graceful strength, floral notes paired with classic DJ character, and balanced astringency. I love it.

A great everyday breakfast tea. Darjeeling Fancy is a smooth and delicate black tea with a slight flowery taste that is good on its own and even goes well with a bit of sugar, if you're into that sort of thing. I just wouldn't recommend putting milk in this tea as it isn't strong enough; all of the tea's flavor is washed away by the milk, from my experience.
