We discovered this Kenya Giakanja Micro-lot while sourcing coffees for our Uzuri African Blend. Every now and again we find a coffee we love so much, that we choose to offer it on its own. Our coffee buyers describe this micro-lot as "the best Kenya we've tasted this year" and on its arrival decided to set it aside for a special offering.
This Giakanja cooperative micro-lot is from the Nyeri coffee-growing region, a short distance from Mount Kenya. Some of the most extraordinary Kenya coffees come from Nyeri, a district blessed with the micro-climate, soil and tree varieties best suited to producing exceptional coffee. The high altitude in particular delivers coffee that is denser, sweeter and more flavorful.
This coffee comes from the Giakanja cooperative group of farmers, working under the guidance of TechnoServe, a non-profit dedicated to entrepreneurship in emerging markets. Through the years, Peet's has worked with TechnoServe to help East African farmers improve the quality of their coffee - and through that, the quality of their lives. Our direct relationship and commitment to pay top prices for such quality coffees mean we have access to the pick of the crop.
Our coffee buyers are exceedingly selective when choosing lots to meet the standards for Kenya perfection: wonderfully aromatic, juicy, lively, with complex flavors hinting of citrus and blackberry. We buy the tiniest, most perfect lots of grade "AA Top". Each and every bag we buy is a prize, but this micro-lot stood above the rest. Cupping our way through many selections, we chose this one for its extra dimension of flavor and aroma. Everything we love about Kenya is magnified: it is extravagantly lush and sweet, full bodied and flavored with wonderful blackberry and cherry notes.
