Established more than 100 years ago, the Kenya Auction is the ultimate meritocracy for coffee, with the top prices awarded to the most exquisite lots, sampled in cupping rooms around the world. Many people say Kenyan coffee is the best there is; we don't think there's any better Kenyan coffee than our Auction Lot.
When the crop is at its seasonal best in March and April, we work with our longstanding partner in Kenya to narrow hundreds of top-grade lots at auction down to a select few that meet our standards for perfection. It's an absolute frenzy — we receive samples directly from the auction and have only a day to taste, debate, compare, and decide on our bids. With the emergence of private sales a few years ago, we will also purchase outside the auction, but only from the same august co-op societies, in the same small bag quantities, and typically at even higher prices.
Fortunately, more than 25 years of experience buying directly from the Kenya Auction gives us an advantage in this competition. Our approach is precision buying at the highest level, and we bid only on the choicest single lots, rather than stock blends created by exporters. And although we may walk away with the prize, the real winners are Kenya coffee drinkers who love its juicy, complex flavors, brown-sugar sweetness, and dazzling dark berry aromas.
My Kenya Auction Lot (whole bean) just arrived yesterday. I had time this morning before work to make a pot AND treat myself to a cup of pour over. I've been drinking coffee for over 40 years, and I had no idea what I was missing. Can't wait to try some of your others. I picked up some Major D's at the local store recently (with a really recent roast date) and it was awesome, too! Thanks!
We have this coffee on subscription as there are no Peets near us in NY. This is my absolute favorite. We have been getting this delivered for years and although I try others, we always, always come back to this one. People come to our house and rave about the coffee. It is smooth and I agree with another reviewer that the body should be more than medium and that the brightness should be more towards balanced. When the bag comes and I open it, my husband laughs because i stand and inhale the aroma for about 5 minutes - it smells like heaven! Best coffee ever!
Actually I ordered Garuda Blend and they shipped this in error. Was going to call and complain on the wrong order but this coffee is awesome. wonderful balance and smooth as silk. Its one of the best coffee's Ive had in years. Thanks Peets for sending me the wrong choice !
Every other varietal I drink now has me comparing it to this bean, and 99% of the time they come up short. Wonderful complex fruity, chocolaty flavors, slightly different each time due to the nature of the auction lots so your tastebuds don't get used to the flavor and become bored. Great hot or iced, have found the best brewing method for my tastes is doing pour-over with water that's at 150f. Sublimely smooth, far less acidity than the guide above would suggest (the only coffee I can drink on a regular basis that doesn't send my reflux crazy).
This is now my daily driver, will continue working my way through the rest of the varieties but can't see any displacing this.
Why this coffee is not on the best sellers list I don't know. i love Peet's coffee and have tried other roast from time to time but always come back to this. Its the best Peet's offers for my taste.
Great stuff. The closest one can get to Ethiopian Queen City / Peaberry without having to wait for special roasts. Amazing aroma and taste and a lovely bright cup in the mornings with some floral elements to it. The wife and I really loved it.
