Gunpowder tea gets its name from the characteristics of the leaves, which are rolled into small, greyish-green pellets resembling old-fashioned gunpowder. The appearance is important, in that the smallest, most tightly rolled leaves of the top grades have much more flavor than the more irregular, open roll of the lower grades. Gunpowder is a highly processed tea, with long periods of rolling followed by extensive grading for size, shape and density. The best organic lots come from central China, and have a full body, pungent flavor and slightly smoky aroma.
This is an outstanding Chinese gunpowder green tea rich, very complex in flavors and strong in caffeine. I would describe it as woodsy, earthy, a tad smoky, buttery, a bit astringent, with nautical and citrus notes, and without the grassy taste of Japanese green teas. Highly recommended especially if you are trying to replace the caffeine from coffee with green tea. A 30 second steep may be good for the uninitiated but a longer steep over 15 minutes may require some honey to balance some bitterness.
