We taste literally hundreds of Assam teas each year. It’s all worth it when we find that traditional bold pungency and sweet, malty depth that made Assam famous in the first place. Assam Extra Fancy features Flowery Orange Pekoe teas from the best gardens at the peak of the second flush, evident by the lovely golden tips. Enjoy hints of honey, toast and wood.
Start with a preheated cup or teapot.
Measure 1 heaping spoonful (3g) of tea for each cup of water.
Bring the water to a rolling boil; steep tea for 4 minutes.
Strain leaves while pouring.
A loose leaf black tea drinker all my life, buying only the best black loose leaf tea, as did my father before me. I usually buy my tea from Canada, i.e. Canadian Breakfast tea, although good anytime and Queen Mary is another full-bodied black loose tea I buy from Canada. The flavor of the two Canafian teas has not changed over the past 25 years...staying true to their name and taste! These teas are Indian grown. Living in Portland, OR for more than 10 years, I also bought tea from Peets, namely Assam Golden tip and Pride of Port. Although these teas cannot measure up in true taste to the Canadian teas mentioned; but an excellent subsitute. I am now living in Salt Lake City, no Peets here...so I buy from a couple of tea shops that are very particular with purchasing true black traditional, no additives tea. Expensive yes, but black loose leaf tea is my drink of choice with cost being no concern. I was unaware, until reading Peets customer reviews that Peets was phasing out their tea component ...truly, truly sad.
I was sad to see this disappear from the shelves of the local Peet's store, so I was glad to see it available on-line. The quality is excellent. To my palate it is fuller and richer than the off the shelf extra fancy. It is also an excellent value. I've paid 4 times the price for similar quality at a nearby boutique tea shop.
This is not a tea that screams, but it is a very satisfying rich cup.
I enjoyed this Assam. Not quite what I expected but good in it's own way. I did not like the fact that the tea had too many foreign particles.
This tea is my soulmate.
After Peet's Tea changed to Mighty Leaf, Assam Extra Fancy is no longer available in store. My husband and I were so disappointed. We went to Peet's just for tea but Assam Extra Fancy was discontinued. Seemed there is no reason to stop by Peet's anymore as we are tea drinkers. I was thrilled to see Assam Extra Fancy available in online store and I immediately purchased a pound. Sadly, I was disappointed as the tea is not as good as before. The color, boldness, fragrance are not the same. I miss Peet's tea!
