About this tea

Tea Story

One of Japan's most unique teas, Genmai Cha means “roasted rice tea.” This blend originated in an era when tea was a barely affordable luxury; Japanese peasants would stretch their precious supply by mixing it with comparatively inexpensive roasted rice. Over time, the toasty, malty-smooth flavor developed an international following. Ours features a superior grade of top quality Sencha with hulled, boiled and roasted rice grains that are skillfully processed and strictly graded. The result is a very drinkable beverage with a rounded body and satisfying aroma.

Brewing Tips

Start with a preheated cup or teapot.
Measure 1 spoonful (3g) of tea for each cup of water.
Bring the water to boil; let it cool for 1 minute (190° F) before steeping tea for 3 minutes.
Strain leaves while pouring.

I am a coffee drinker, I love coffee (which is why I love Peet's!). Having said that: This is the most refreshing, mind-clearing and just plain good tea there is. The delicate nutty flavor with great green tea is a pleasure to drink. I have some every day, it's especially good in the afternoon when I need a little lift.

This is by far the best green tea I have ever tasted. I cannot compare it to any other store bought or coffee shop brand.

I came across this tea in a coffee shop while visiting my daughter in San Mateo, CA. The crisp flavors of roasted rice and smooth green tea blend exquisitely to produce a surprising richness that has truly captivated me.

A new addition to my Peets store. When I first saw the tea I thought of it more as a novelty then a beverage. The first pot was amazing I had never had anything like it. After 3 or 4 pots I had fallen absolutley in love with it!

Any tea drinker who has not had Genmai Cha needs to try this. It's a diferent animal when it comes to tea taste. It's a plethora of tastes all in one cup. Warm and nutty with a lovely savory quality. A hearty cup of tea that is truly satisfying. A great green tea for someone seeking a substantial, but less astringent, flavor from their cup. The special graded roasted rice adds a slightly salty note, and the green tea adds some smokey undertones. Very interesting tea and an interesting story behind it. Try is sweetened with a hint of honey or agave!!

I like to recommend this tea to my coffee drinkers that had to switch to tea because this tea it has some weight to it - still a sweet pea green tea with some toasty volume...let me know what you think?

I don't want to be reduntant, but this is an amazing tea!! My absolute favorite green tea! It needs to be said, again and again. This tea is a well balanced sencha, with a buttery silkness texture. It could be an appetizer soup with a sushi buffet. You'll either hate this tea, or LOVE it! But either way, you must try it!

I love this tea. Genmai Cha is smooth with a nutty finish. I like the lightness of the tea.

Personally, I go through phases where a particular tea will be my sole brew of choice for a given period of time. Generally these phases only last a couple of weeks to a month, tops. Since I first tasted Genmai Cha nearly one year ago, it has dominated my teapot and remained my absolute, hands-down favorite. I really enjoy the balance between the toasty rice and the vegetal Sencha. The heartiness and warmth of the tea reminds me of those qualities associated with soup. I've even tasted the steeped leaves left over after pouring a cup, and it's totally edible and palatable!
I hear customers occasionally comment about how they would like to find a green tea that isn't perfume-like, like a Jasmine, or strong and smoky, like Gunpowder. While Hubei Silver Tip, Sencha or a Lung Ching Dragonwell are among my recommendations, I will always place Genmai Cha at the top of my list.
Also, ther
