First Flush Darjeeling: Sungma Estate

Rare Lot Tea #1 - Bright and delicate with notes of fresh herbs and sweet grapes
About this product

Product details

Sungma Estate is one of my favorite places on earth. The cool mist draped across the Himalayan foothills make for a magical setting. The first harvest of the season is remarkable for its aroma of fresh moss and wildflowers, full body and complex flavor with notes of honey and chestnuts. - Eliot Jordan, Tea Master

Peet's first flush Darjeeling was one of my absolute favorite teas on earth. I also have a few leaves left in a cannister. So, (a) I hope it comes back into stock since it is always out of stock: and (b) I hope it is not as disappointing as some of the reviews here indicate. I'll withod my judgment until I have a chance to try it. So, for now, this note is just a missive to please find some good stuff. I'm ready with my wallet. Thanks.

Have to go with Ed. I was down to my last leaves of Peet's last first flush and so was thrilled to read about this. It's very grassy and not at all distinctive. (And I ordered two!) I really do go back to the day when Mr. Peet poured the coffee and served (and bought) the tea at the N. Berkeley store. He once told me he was indifferent about the coffee and it was the tea he loved. The wretchedly named Mighty Leaf (I've bought another, too) is a far cry from those glory days.

This First Flush Darjeeling was a new one for me, and I quite enjoyed it. Very much on the green side of First Flush Darjeelings, with a slightly herbal, grassy character if brewed at too high a temperature. Letting the water cool to 195F, however, lets the floral character come through.

Not a tea for milk, though a touch of good honey would likely go well. If you're looking for a black Darjeeling, this is not for you. Think more akin to an Oolong on the greenish side of that equation. A perfect summer afternoon tea to sip and savor.

I would give this tea 4 or 5 stars if it were sold as a green tea, but as a Darjeeling, it is completely lacking in characteristic features--aroma and at least a touch of acidity just to mention two. As my wife said after trying a sip, "Is there anything in it?" A nice label doesn't make up for widely missing the standard that Peets has delivered with first flush Darjeelings that I have bought for the two decades. Like those who have reviewed other new products from Mighty Leaf, I'm now unfortunately faced with the task of finding a tea vendor that seems to know what they are doing.
