Learn about our support of KIMSSA School in Ethiopia
Since 2006, Peet’s and our employees have been sponsoring students of KIMSSA, a tutoring and vocational school in Ethiopia that helps underprivileged children graduate from the government system and then find employment.
Founded by Mr. Hailu Gebre Hiwot, a long-time business associate of Peet’s, the KIMSSA school is a non-profit, non-governmental charity organization committed to helping disadvantaged students. Approximately 90 children (the poorest of the poor and orphans) currently attend the school.
Sponsorship fees included teachers’ wages, school uniforms, administrative costs, and a monthly allowance to enable the children to receive adequate nutrition to be able to perform academically.
Peet’s is committed to sponsoring these children -- some of them as young as six years – through their high school graduation. KIMSSA in turn guarantees to help these children find employment upon their successful graduation.

A letter from the founder:
Dear Friends at Peet’s,
How elated we felt at the news of this year’s sponsorship collection! Our sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who participated in the program.
The new academic school year (2001, E.C.) just started and all the kids are enrolled. During our rainy season when other schools were closed we conducted various programs in which some 60 new kids (in addition to the 125 we had) participated. During the vacation classes were given to give students advance knowledge and preparation for new grades and subjects.
We are slowly but surely progressing to having our own school building. The City Administration is in process of preparing the title deed of the plot of land given to KIMSSA.
