We try to be a good neighbor in the communities in which we work, and a good steward of the earth's resources. To this end, Peet's supports a variety of environmental initiatives.
Many customers at our retail stores already know of --and use-- our cup and bag discounts. Use your own cup when you order a drink, and we give you 10 cents off the drink price. Or re-use one of our coffee bags, and we'll give you 25 cents off the purchase price.
Eleven Peet's stores now have all their coffee grounds commercially composted. In many others, customers pick up grounds for their own gardens.
Many stores and the roasting plant have converted to energy-efficient lighting.
The roasting plant has just given permanent plastic cups to all its employees. Using permanent cups instead of paper ones will keep some 3,000 cups a week out of the local landfill.
All stores, in addition to the roasting plant, donate their misgrinds (either coffee that is ground incorrectly, or that is past our freshness standard) to local food banks and homeless shelters.
Coffee bean chaff --the dry outer membrane that surrounds green beans-- contains protein, some fat, and large amounts of fiber. We give 18 tons of chaff annually to an animal feed company for inclusion in its products.
