Peet's in the Community

Peet's is proud to sponsor the following artists and organizations.

California Shakespeare Theater
Founded in 1974, California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) makes boldly imagined and deeply entertaining interpretations of Shakespeare’s plays, fresh rediscoveries of important works of World Theater, and new works inspired by classic literature. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Jonathan Moscone and Managing Director Debbie Chinn, Cal Shakes aims to build a culture of life-long creativity through their work on stage and in education, including: a fair-weather season of four plays performed at the Bruns Memorial Amphitheater in Orinda, CA; New Works/New Communities, which brings people of diverse backgrounds together around the creation of a new work of theater inspired by classic literature; and Artistic Learning—including School-Based Residencies, Student Discovery Matinees, Theater Training and Audience Enrichment—which seeks to awaken and nurture the power of creative thinking in learners of all ages

In its most recent season, more than 50,000 people from Sacramento, to San José, and beyond, attended 114 performances, including 4,300 students for their sold-out Student Discovery Matinees. School residencies served another 1,700 students in 17 schools in economically and geographically diverse communities; 7,500 youth and adults participated in theater training classes and audience enrichment programs. Hundreds of low-income youth and adults have engaged directly with artists in the creation of new plays.

Berkeley Rep
Born in a storefront on College Avenue, Berkeley Rep has moved to the forefront of American theatre—and is still telling unforgettable stories. Founded in 1968 by Michael Leibert, the Theatre quickly earned respect for presenting the finest plays with top-flight actors. In 1980, with the support of the local community, Berkeley Rep built the 400-seat Thrust Stage, where its reputation steadily grew over the next two decades. It gained renown for presenting important new dramatic voices alongside fresh adaptations of seldom-seen classics. In recognition of its place on the national stage, Berkeley Rep was honored with the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1997. The company celebrated by unveiling a new 600-seat proscenium stage in 2001, the state-of-the-art Roda Theatre. It also opened the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre, a permanent home for its long tradition of outreach and education programs. The addition of these two buildings transformed a single stage into a vital and versatile performing arts complex, the linchpin of a bustling Downtown Arts District which has helped revitalize Berkeley. In four decades, four million people have enjoyed more than 300 shows at Berkeley Rep, including 50 world premieres. The Theatre now welcomes an annual audience of 180,000, serves 20,000 students and hosts dozens of community groups, thanks to 1,000 volunteers and more than 400 artists, artisans and administrators. Recent shows which Berkeley Rep has helped to send to New York include: Bridge & Tunnel, Brundibar, Eurydice, Passing Strange, Taking Over, In the Next Room, and Wishful Drinking.

Rebuilding Together
Peet’s employees have volunteered with Rebuilding Together (Albany-Berkeley-Emeryville chapter) on National Rebuilding Day since 2000. Over the years, Peet’s employees have helped to repair and remodel the Center for Independent Living in Berkeley, Nia House - a childhood education center, Longfellow Community Collaborative, and the Center for Accessible Technology.

Rebuilding Together (formerly “Christmas in April”) is a non-profit organization that mobilizes volunteers to repair the homes of low-income elderly and disabled persons, enabling these homeowners to live healthier, safer and more independent lives. In addition, Rebuilding Together rehabilitates community facilities including schools, shelters, senior centers, clinics and other neighborhood organizations. Work is accomplished by groups of skilled and unskilled volunteers, who come together during the month of April, with work culminating on the fourth weekend of April.
