About this tea

Tea Story

This year’s blend has a special guest tea, an organic whole leaf black tea from Rwanda. This eastern African country is probably better known for coffee, but it is a long-standing producer of high-grown teas. Our favorite Rwandan tea comes from Rukeri Estate, and it is an excellent example of the best tea in Africa – fragrant, citrusy, tangy and mildly brisk flavor from long, delicately arched whole leaves. The farm is certified organic, certified by Rain Forest Alliance, and is a member of Ethical Tea Partnership.

The heftier parts of the blend are two Peet’s classics. There’s whole leaf Assam from the best of the Second Flush period – golden-tipped leaves that taste bold, pungent, malty-sweet and biscuity. And there’s the well-loved Yunnan Fancy with its mellow, creamy, toasty and floral characteristics. All in all this year’s Anniversary Breakfast Blend has a rich and deep flavor that really satisfies.

Brewing Tips

preheat the teapot, measure 3 grams (one dinner teaspoon) per each 8oz. cup of water, pour on water at 212°F (boiling), and steep for 4-5 minutes.

2014's Anniversary Breakfast Blend is very similar to 2013's, so if you liked 2013's, you'll definitely like this year's. I just got mine this morning, and tasting against what I have left from 2013's blend this seems slightly brighter, but that may be just that it's fresher.

A delicious breakfast team, with a solid base of China Black (Yin Jun Mei), with the brightness of Ceylon whole leaf, and a nice finish of malty Assam. This is a high quality whole leaf tea that really works for first thing in the morning. No need for milk or sugar, though I suppose you could put some milk in if you insist - it should stand up to it fine.I'll be ordering a couple more 1/4 Lb tins, to get me through to the year.

The 2013 Anniversary Breakfast Blend is another winner. This morning, I tasted the 2013 blend against my last remaining 2012 blend. (I absolutely loved the 2012 blend, thinking it the best in several years.)

The 2013 blend is more earthy than the 2012, with some woody notes. The Yin Jun Mei comes through clearly, providing a smooth woody body to the blend. On its own, Yin Jun Mei is quite mellow, but maybe a bit flat. But here, the Ceylon adds some nice citrusy brightness. And underneath it all, the maltiness of the Assam is there, giving you a hearty breakfast tea that can be enjoyed without milk or sugar, but if you insist, it will certainly stand up to milk.

All in all, a winner. I'll have to live with it for a while to know if it will become a daily favourite as last year's Anniversary Breakfast Blend was, but already I can tell I'm going to enjoy this one.

Bought a box today, drinking my first cup now. This tea is seriously delicious. At first I thought it had a hint of coffee in it, which brought me to the Peet's page to check it out. Unless that's the secret ingredient, it seems this dark chocolaty flavor can come directly from a tea leaf. I wholeheartedly recommend this tea.
