How It Tastes

Intensely bold and flavorful. Pronounced smoky overtones with a pleasant bite.

The signature taste and rich coffee character of French Roast comes from a longer, hotter roast, which not all beans can handle. For our darkest roast, we select only top-quality Arabica coffee from the highest altitudes of prime Latin American growing regions. Beans mature slowly at these altitudes, becoming denser, harder and packed with flavor — perfect for retaining boldness and complexity under the intense heat of a deep roast. Peet's French Roast is not a coffee for the cautious, but for those who embrace the powerful taste, pronounced smoky overtones, and pleasant bite.

Worth Noting

This dark, deeply flavorful blend pairs well with cream and sugar, and inspires reactions like this one from John "Nic" Nicolini, a Peet's roaster for over 20 years: “On a normal day, I cup 50 coffees before 7 a.m. But I always come back to French. You inhale that smoky aroma, and then a subtle sweetness pops out that awakens your taste buds. It’s visceral.”

I've been drinking other French Roasts for years. I have recently tried Peets and find it the most delicious one yet!

I have brewed Peets limited editions by the melitta single cone method for years and still do. I have also just started making Bulletproof Coffee. For the Bulletproof receipe with a Press Pot , nothing beats Peets French Roast. It is by far the best tasting coffee for this method.

I am currently having a coffee crisis in my house. I have been drinking Peet's French Roast coffee, espresso grind for over five years and lately the coffee is not as good anymore. I have noticed a few other reviews indicating the same problem. I feel like they changed the beans? It goes stale very fast, even a batch that was roasted on 10/31/18. Starbuck's discontinued its French Roast blend, so I am curious as to whether or not Peet's also modified its French Roast. If anyone has a suggestion for an alternate to try, I would like to know.

Easily the best tasting, smoothest French Roast I've encountered. I love bolder, darker roasts, but the fuller body is often accompanied by a bitter or burnt taste. Peet's is the French Roast for those who love dark coffee and those who haven't had the opportunity to have the best coffee in the world yet.

Fantastic coffee. Great customer service I haven't received a bad bean in 30 years of being a Peetnik.
