How It Tastes

Big. Both savory and sweet at the same time, shot with tropical fruit, spice and sweet tobacco. Heavy bodied.

We suspect the name Batavia (the Dutch name for Jakarta) was chosen by our supplier for its alliterative rather than geographic value, as this coffee hails from further West, and much higher up, but blue is bang on point. The color of this coffee before roasting is as bold and blue-green as coffee beans get, foreshadowing a flavor as fine and full as we’ve tasted from Java in a long time.

Worth Noting

The Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra almost touch, separated by just 15 miles at the closest point, so perhaps it’s not surprising that the flavor of Java Blue Batavia is closest to Sumatra. Very, very good Sumatra, which helps to explain why we brought back this returning favorite. The farmer, Tobing, grows 50 hectares of coffee in Ciwidey, West Java and also collects from smaller neighbors. He doesn’t export, so after harvesting and hulling the coffee, he barges it to Medan, the major port of Sumatra, for final hand-sorting and shipping.
