How It Tastes

Intensely bold and flavorful. Pronounced smoky overtones with a pleasant bite.

The signature taste and rich coffee character of French Roast comes from a longer, hotter roast, which not all beans can handle. For our darkest roast, we select only top-quality Arabica coffee from the highest altitudes of prime Latin American growing regions. Beans mature slowly at these altitudes, becoming denser, harder and packed with flavor — perfect for retaining boldness and complexity under the intense heat of a deep roast. Peet's French Roast is not a coffee for the cautious, but for those who embrace the powerful taste, pronounced smoky overtones, and pleasant bite.

Worth Noting

This dark, deeply flavorful blend pairs well with cream and sugar, and inspires reactions like this one from John "Nic" Nicolini, a Peet's roaster for over 20 years: “On a normal day, I cup 50 coffees before 7 a.m. But I always come back to French. You inhale that smoky aroma, and then a subtle sweetness pops out that awakens your taste buds. It’s visceral.”

I like coffee - not coffee flavored water. Every once in a while I venture out to try another roast, but I always come back to Peet's French. I use it in both in my drip brewer and my espresso machine, and sometimes pour over or french press. I love the smoky bitterness balanced by the subtle sweetness and the body is just right. I also love that I don't get any burned flavors like with some brands. Either you're not accidentally burning any beans at all or you're sorting out the burned beans. Your roasters are top notch!

One of my customers gave me a bag of whole beans, just to try since I was drinking my coffee via French Press. After trying this roast, I haven't found an equal in my opinion. I do like the Italian Roast as well, but always come back to this. Great flavor. If your the kind that need that strong pick-me-up in the morning, you can't go wrong.

I have been drinking Peets coffee since 1969 on Vine Street. I have enjoyed your french roast for many years, but I must say it doesn't have the distinctive french roast flavor I have enjoyed in the past.

Alright, though leaning a bit towards average. There is a very mild hint of caramel when it's fresh. For a French roast, it seemed to be held back from its full potential. Could have been roasted a bit more.
