About this coffee

Coffee Story

The signature taste and rich coffee character of French Roast comes from a longer, hotter roast, which not all beans can handle. For our darkest roast, we select only top-quality Arabica coffee from the highest altitudes of prime Latin American growing regions. Beans mature slowly at these altitudes, becoming denser, harder and packed with flavor — perfect for retaining boldness and complexity under the intense heat of a deep roast.

Peet's French Roast is not a coffee for the cautious, but for those who embrace the powerful taste, pronounced smoky overtones, and pleasant bite. This dark, deeply flavorful blend pairs well with cream and sugar, and inspires reactions like this one from John "Nic" Nicolini, a Peet's roaster for over 20 years: “On a normal day, I cup 50 coffees before 7 a.m. But I always come back to French. You inhale that smoky aroma, and then a subtle sweetness pops out that awakens your taste buds. It’s visceral."

The Peets French roast was my introduction to premium coffee. I have been drinking this since I was a student at Cal around 1976. I still purchase this stuff today.

Peets French roast may be too strong for some folks however. It is their signature darkest roast, and makes excellent espresso too.

I have been drinking Peet's since 2007. When I first moved to Seattle. Now I've in Portland. Whenever I try another brand it never compares. Peet's has ruined me for any other.

I have been drinking Peets French Roast for years. I love the deep rich flavor. I use a Chemix coffee pot, I think it makes a excellent cup of coffee. I also have the coffee ground on the number "3". It is a fine grind not expresso fine but fine. And I use 4 large scoops to yeild 3 cups (including creamer). I get crabby drinking any other cup.

i couldn't help but notice the mixed reviews french roast has gotten. as a french roast coffee imbiber, couple of suggestions: be wary of buying coffee beans from a grocery store. you have no idea how long they've been shelf sitting. secondly, ensure your coffee making equipment is immaculate. finally, start the coffee making process with cold water. (some coffee making fiends use only bottled spring water.)

Bought a 12 ounce bag of your French Roast, whole bean at the local Wal Mart this morning. Brought it home and opened the bag. The coffee looked and smelled great. Ground some up and used it in my espresso machine to make a cup. Wow, when you say smooth you really mean it! The hot dark liquid was pretty much without any flavor!! However, the reason I bought the dark roast was for some strong coffee flavor. Needless to say, I was disappointed. So I went to your website and looked up the reviews for this product. Hmmmmm..........

I have to say this is by far one of the most delicious coffee I had..however, recently I was visiting some friends in CA and bought some of this coffee to bring back home...MAJOR dissapointment!! did not tasted the same ;(....I guess the coffee at the store I went wasn't as fresh as i tought it will be....maybe some other time....

For those looking for a bold start to the day look no further. This is an undenialble coffee. French Roast is rich, and dark with a surprising finish. It is so smooth you can drink it black, so rich it's flavor will hold up to cream.

Mellow sweet smell, makes me salivate. Flavors of dark bittersweet chocolate and burnt caramel. Full bodied with smooth low acidity and a lingering aftertaste.

French roast is lively, full body coffee. Rich and powerful, complements cream and sugar and is great for the hearty coffee drinker.

I'll tell you a secret: I don't like French Roast coffee. It's usually roasted beyond any recognizable character the coffee's origin may have promised. That's why Peet's French Roast is such a revelation! Carbony and pungent, yet pleasingly bittersweet (anise? licorice?), Peet's French Roast is still lively enough to be satisfyingly roasty, rather than flat and burnt.
