How It Tastes

The complex flavors of blueberry and spice deliver a truly special cup utterly different from our Ethiopian Fancy, which is a washed process coffee from the Yirgacheffe area. Anyone who likes fruity African coffee, or indeed, sun-dried Mocha from Yemen, will love this special offering.


This natural process and sun-dried coffee hails from Dire Dawa, the “Queen City” of the Harrar region of Ethiopia. Harrar is closely associated with the beginnings of the coffee trade and is the traditional center for natural coffee.

Worth Noting

Grown by smallholder farmers, the cherry is meticulously hand collected, sorted and dried, resulting in a special quality with an ancient pedigree. This is how coffee was made before modern milling machinery had even been imagined, the whole red coffee fruits spread to shrivel and oxidize in the high desert heat. And this is why Queen City Harar tastes so prominently of dried fruits like fig and date. It is a dried fruit, and at once a spicy, full-bodied Peet’s favorite.

2013's Queen City proved to be a powerhouse of exquisite flavor and a bold exemplar of Ethiopian Harar longberry flavor notes. The batches we sampled in our office proudly announced themselves with complex winy, blueberry notes (that much reminded us of Imagery Winery's Code Blue) and made for an excellent cup. Brewed as a pour-over, in the Aeropress, or as an iced coffee using the Japanese method, you can't go wrong.

This coffee is the fruitiest coffee I've ever had, but its not tropical fruity its fruity like a fine wine. The description is spot on and its definitely one of the most unique coffee I've ever had but i'm just not a fan of winy fruit taste although that's what a lot of people love about Ethiopia coffee.
