How It Tastes

Red Mocha Haraaz begins with the ripest coffee cherries, sun-dried for a cup of warmth and complexity that simply must be tasted to be believed. This year’s selection is one of the very best we have seen, delivering fruit flavors ranging from bright tangerine to sugary fig and date, and a familiar dry cocoa finish.


Red Mocha Haraaz—red for its origin abutting the Red Sea. Mocha for the port of Al-Mahka, the birthplace of coffee as a trade. And Haraaz for the high mountain redoubt of Jabal Haraaz, where it grows on ancient, terraced steps. Amidst the turmoil in Yemen, our friend and coffee farmer, Shabbir Ezzi, pushes on—faithfully growing, collecting, and sun-drying ripe cherries. Each cup of Red Mocha Haraaz is a sweet, spicy draught of history. A bit of a miracle and an exquisite cup—perhaps the rarest and the richest of the year.

Worth Noting

Red Mocha Haraaz is produced at an uncommon level of care. It is from a single crop, versus mixed-age Mocha. It is from a single place—Jabal Haraaz—versus mixed-region Mocha. And while most naturally processed coffees reflect the range of cherry ripeness, this coffee is processed purely from perfect, red fruit.

Superb but I thought last year's version was a bit better. For coffee this expensive 1/2 lb s/b a 1/2 lb - the one shipped to me was underweight.

We really enjoyed this roast from Ethiopia. I'm in Germany, where decent coffee is in low supply. Sadly, our last post of this roast was this morning. I might have to break down and order more, regardless of the Kaffeesteuer.

I love the coffees from Arabia and this one is unique. It smelled like fruit when I opened the bag. I like slightly darker roasts so four stars. This may require a medium roast to keep the delicate flavors......but maybe because that's 'in style' now.

Very earthy and smooth, when i first looked, the size of the beans reminded me of kona peaberry, or some other smaller coffee bean. These aren't as dark roasted as some of peets other coffees, and after grinding, you get this really rich earthy scent. These beans are not oily at all. There is a slight red tint to the coffee after grinding as well. This coffee is so smooth and definitely has a hint of some red berry, i dont make out the cherry as some have said, but it's very good almost giving it a sweet finish.

I received a bag as a gift. And what a gift it turned out to be! As an inveterate coffee drinker (in 70+ years, I've tasted a few), I thought I had reached the pinnacle some five years ago. However, after enjoying this one, I may have a new favorite that'll be difficult to live without. With each cup, the aroma lingers throughout the house. My grand kids came over the day after my first cup. They noticed right away and commented, "Grandpa, what smells so good?" Thankfully it tastes as good as it smells. I've made sure to order more. A bit pricey, yes. But then, I've always believed that for the most part, you get what you pay for. This seems to fit mantra.
