How It Tastes

Rich and ample-bodied. Dried fruit sweetness, tropical wood and herbal notes.

It comes to us from the Indo Pacific, but Aged Sumatra is really a gift from the Dutch. The unique and complex flavor of this rich coffee owes its origin to long journeys across the trade routes, when the beans were transported with spices in wooden-hulled ships. Mr. Peet, also of Dutch origin, was instrumental in spreading the wealth of this "spice box of flavors" here. He knew how hard it is to find really good aged coffees. Most exporters aren't willing to endure the lengthy aging process before selling their beans. And not all of those who do it start out with beans good enough to become aged coffee for Peet's customers. The aging process deepens flavors while also mellowing them, accentuating certain notes over others — but it doesn't add flavor to mediocre beans.

Worth Noting

Even when you start with the right coffee, you also need the right climate. Aging has to take place in a tropical environment where the beans can absorb moisture during the monsoon season, and release some of it during the drier months, without ever being allowed to dry out completely. That's how the coffee develops its concentrated body and distinctly nuanced aroma.

My fav coffee! Worth Every Penny. Only thing better is the Blue Mountain which is an annual treat :)

Great coffee and flavor. I love this coffee and have tried others but keep coming back to this one consistently.

Remains the best coffee offered by Peet's and thus also the best coffee in the world. Heavenly fragrance -- rich, earthy, somewhat smoky, the very essence of coffee, great body, no acidity at all, lingering taste, simply unbeatable. I use it for espresso, where I have to mix it with a somewhat sharper taste; I use Peet's Italian Roast, which complements it very well, giving more punch without introducing any acidity nor reducing its palette of flavors and tastes.
When Peet's offers Blue Batak or Peaberry Batak, then I replace the Italian Roast with the Batak -- less body, but the flavor and taste mix with the Aged Sumatra is just the absolute best!

This is a fantastic coffee. It remains one of the two Asia rim coffees I drink on regular basis. It is fantastic when pairing it with a meal or drinking it alone in the afternoon. I prefer dark roast and AS remains strong without bitterness to the taste. I highly recommend.

After many years of trying just about all of them, this is probably our favorite. Nicely aromatic with a smoky-woodsy feel, rich yet still very smooth. It does not have the caffeine kick you get with some other brands.
