How It Tastes

Hibiscus aroma with passion fruit sweetness. Delicate, apricot finish.

History

The region known as Kona on Hawaii's big island has been synonymous with superb coffee for more than 150 years. Steep volcanic hillsides and a microclimate of sunny mornings and cloudy afternoons create the perfect conditions for cultivating smooth, sweet-flavored beans. Follow the Old Mamalahoa Highway, and you'll see coffee growing on both sides of the road — but the best comes from the mauka, or mountain side. That's where the trees reach their natural willowy height, requiring harvesters to pull the ripe cherries closer with hooks. We think the refined flavors of these beans make them well worth the extra effort. That's why only the highest grown, highest quality Kona from a single estate on the mauka goes into this reserve. The taste is mild and mellow, with a hint of tropical sweetness; it's like Hawaiian hospitality in a cup.

Worth Noting

Like our other reserve coffees, Kona is only available in limited quantities — 1/2-lb. bags — and roasted to order just once a week, exclusively on Wednesdays. We do this to make sure it's as fresh as possible when you receive it. Orders must be placed on or before each Tuesday, and are shipped within 24 hours of roasting. You also have the option of choosing a future Wednesday shipment at checkout.

Having not had Kona before from any other roasters, I can't make any comparisons. On its own, it has moderate floral notes. Quite smoky, but roasted just right so those subtle characteristics are not entirely lost. It's an above-average coffee, but there are better out there that meet and exceed expectations for half the price and double the quantity. I can definitely see how this would fare better if it was roasted a little lighter. The asking price for this is more for the namesake and reputation of Kona.

Some like it dark; some like it light; everyone has their preference. I find the dark roasting brings out a full, complex taste to it. It has very little acidity and a sweetness to it. This is excellent in a press pot. If only Peet's would bring back its Dutch cocoa, I could make a great mocha once again as well.

Concur with other reviews. This Kona is very poor. You couldn't even tell it's Kona without the bag. No taste/no smell. JR Reserve much better at same price point.

What a nice take on Kona and I disagree with some previous comments, I like the darkness of this roast, but I respect some want a lighter brew. I am a major Major Dickerson fan so this was a nice treat. If you are looking for that wow feeling you had when you were sitting on the hotel Lanai in Maui sipping your first cup of Kona coffee that delighted all your senses to the highest level. No, that's asking quite a bit from Coffee especially if you are sitting on a fire escape in New Jersey. But the richness of this roast is excellent, deep complex flavor with just a slight nut taste and no bitterness. Very well done Peets!!!

Poorest Kona I've ever had.
