How It Tastes

Our Masala Chai blend combines pungent Assam and South India broken leaf teas blended with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and freshly ground tellicherry peppercorns. It's a perfect balance of sweet and hot spices, blended in the traditional style of Kolkata, India. Brew it fresh and mix it with warm milk and sugar to taste.

History

In India, "Chai" is the word for tea, and "Masala" means a mixture of spices. This cup is traditionally prepared using local tea boiled in a mixture of water and milk, with lots of sugar, and whatever spices are popular. There are probably as many variations on the recipe as there are households in India, but the general result is a spicy, sweet, and milky tea. Our Masala Chai is in the style of Kolkata tea vendors.

One star is one too many for this horrible tea. I was staying at a hotel in Asheville, NC that had Mighty Leaf teas for its guests, both in the rooms and in the lobby. The lobby was out of all but the Masala Chai, so I tried it. It was so bad that I threw it out. Try Bigelow or Twinning's chai teas until Mighty Leaf comes to its senses.

The original Peet's Masala Chai tea was just incredible - well balanced, smooth, and delicious. I don't know why they had to go and change things. I suspect one of the reasons it tastes terrible now is these awful satchels Mighty Leaf insists on using. Old school paper tea bags are a *good* thing because the let the tea flavor out. I miss my Chai :-(

One star for every Mighty Leaf tea I have tried so far. With only 5 tea bags left of the original Peet's Masala Chai, I've ordered delicious organic assam from Divinitea and will resume making Chai from scratch. This is where the new owners of Peet's really fell down.

Meh. I agree with all the other reviewers who say the Mighty Leaf chai is not as good as the old Peet's. The Peet's masala chai was the perfect chai, nice flavor, very well balanced. Mighty Leaf is great in concept--comes in the premium sachets and has visible pieces of spices--but every Mighty Leaf flavor I've ever tried has been mediocre at best and this was no exception. Please bring back the old Peet's masala chai, or I'll have to take my tea business elsewhere.

Use to love the Masala Chai. Definitely NOT the same now. You can say it's the same blend but after drinking the original for years... the taste buds know. I miss the good stuff!
