How It Tastes

Each cup offers herbal aromatics of lemongrass and sage tempered by brûléed sugars and natural brightness. With a swirl of tobacco and tropical spice, a single cup can fill a whole room with its fragrance. As scarce and exquisite as this find is, we can only encourage you to drink now.

This returning favorite is a remarkable peaberry Sumatra from the lush greenery surrounding Lake Toba. This region—Lintong—has long been our favorite when searching out exceptional lots. Characterized by rich caramel flavors and herbal aromatics, it’s a lovely cup to begin with. As a peaberry, this coffee rises above the rest.

Worth Noting

Peaberries are a rarity, occurring only about 5% of the time. Just one bean develops within the coffee cherry rather than the normal two, concentrating the flavor and enhancing the aromas. The Batak farmers utilize a wet-hulling process to produce this flavorful Sumatra. Then the prized single beans are screened from the rest. The effect of these combined factors is staggering.

This is my first experience with both Sumatra Batak Peaberry and ordering from Peet's directly. I wanted something I couldn't get at my local grocery store. This coffee is amazing... complex, smooth, bright yet rich, a complete delight to the senses. I will absolutely be getting more.

I just received my Sumatra Batak Peaberry subscription, and so far this is my favorite roast. It has a very smooth bold flavor, no acidity, and is a dark roast but definitely not too bold. So delicious I am ordering 2 more bags.

This year’s Batak does seem a little brighter than in years past but it’s still a delicious Indonesian that’s worth a premium price. I love the smooth tobacco thing with no bitterness or weird aftertaste. If you like a nice, dark roast add a little more coffee grinds—the Batak holds up nicely.

Delicious. Everything I hoped for. The rich and dark roast style for me is characteristic of Peets and suits my tastes very very well. This Batak Peaberry is no exception.

I really like the smooth rich taste. One of the best coffees I have had from Peet's. I may make mine stronger than others because I do get some other flavors when I drink it black (my usual way).
